Book Review: The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet by Bernie Su + Kate Rorick

The secrety diary of Lizzie Bennet by Bernie Su & Kate RorickOn with the book reviews! We’ll see how long I can last NOT reading books during my lunch breaks.

#47 – The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet by Bernie Su & Kate Rorick

Genre: Contemporary, Fiction, Internet & Web Culture, Romance (but not your typical romance!)

Page Numbers: 392 pages

Dates Read: 9/4/14 – 9/7/14

Plot in three lines or less: This is the novelization of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, which can be found all over the interwebs. (YouTube, Pemberley Digital, Twitter, Facebook, etc.) Basically, it’s the story of Pride & Prejudice told from a modern day perspective. I’ve already posted my thoughts this month on this particular modern-day adaptation. You can find those thoughts here.

New read or re-read? New read.

Would you read it again? Would you recommend it to others?  Yes, I would read it again, and would recommend it to others. What would be even MORE brilliant is to read this in conjunction WITH the videos. Because while you do see a lot of the same things cycled through (after all, this is her diary, so of course you’re going to hear about the things she puts on her videos), you also do get some new details about stuff that was going on behind the scenes, that didn’t make it to the videos. I didn’t watch all of the videos, because I didn’t think to do that until I was about 2/3 of the way through the book. I then went ahead and watched specific videos around several key events in the book that I really wanted to make sure I had all the information straight in my head.

Why did I pick it up? It was actually an impulse buy for me from the bookstore one day while I was there. I was legitimately going to B&N to find a smaller copy of a Dresden Files book that I needed to take with me to Dragon*Con (because of weight issues, obviously 😉 ), and this sort of jumped out at me and landed in my hands, and I walked away with it. Being that I’m absolutely in love with all things Lizzie Bennet Diaries, of course I was going to end up owning and reading it.

Rating: 5/5

Other Notes: This book is way better than your average film-to-book novelization. If you think that you don’t need to read it because you saw all the videos, I would say, “Think again.” There’s a lot more in here than just what we all saw. Some of my favorite things we got to see more of include All the Details about All the Awkward Dances, and waaay more of Mr. & Mrs. Bennet than just what was cosplayed. Oh, and you get to find out exactly what Darcy’s letter said. 🙂 Well done, Mr. Su, well done.

Grand Total: 104
