#49 – “The One and Only Ivan” by Katherine Applegate
Genre: Children’s Literature, Newbery Award Winner, Classic
Page Numbers: 341 pages
Dates Read: 12/1/13
Plot in 3 lines or less: Ivan the gorilla lives at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, and as far as he is concerned, that is just enough for him. He rarely thinks about his prior life in the jungle; no, he would much rather think about the TV shows he watches and his friends Stella (an elderly elephant) and Bob (a stray dog), and the art he loves to create. That is until Ruby comes, a baby elephant that was recently taken away from her family. Her arrival changes everything for Ivan, and it’s up to Ivan to make sure that the change is for the best.
New Read or Re-read? This was a new read for me.
Would you read it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, and yes.
Was it easy to read? Yes, it was a very easy read for me.
Favorite Character(s): I loved Ivan, the silverback gorilla who has to embrace change in order to protect those he loves. George & Julia, the father-daughter team who are instrumental in helping Ivan realize his potential are also endearing.
Is there anything about it that you did not like? No. Well, that’s not entirely true. Animal cruelty is a touchy subject for a lot of people these days, but it is enough to know that things are resolved in the end for Ivan in a positive way.
Newbery Award Winning Year: 2013
Is there anything else you would like to add? I have a lot of various book-related goals and things I would like to accomplish. Reading all of the Newbery Award Winning Books is just one of them. I did not realize when I purchased the book that it was in fact a winner, but seeing it there, sitting in my lap when I was getting ready to start reading it reminded me of that goal. I’d always wanted to blog about the winners and my opinions and thoughts about them, and I realized that I was finally primed and ready to actually do that. I’ve read a lot of them before, but for the purposes of this blog (as well as some other reading goals I have), I will plan to reread them all, so as to put similar reviews up here.
